While an education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is still a great bargain when compared to other Big Ten schools, the fact remains that tuition is increasing: Students faced a 10-percent rise this fall.
Fortunately, alumni and friends saw to another increase: private support for the department. This generosity was exhibited September 20, 2001, at the mechanical engineering department's 26th annual scholarship night.
Nearly 100 students were honored for their academic achievement. Fifty sponsors contributed a total of $207,000 for the scholarship funds. Many donors attended the event, personally awarding their scholarship.
Notably, Victor and Mikhoko Vacquier traveled from California to present the WV Distinguished Scholarship. It was Vacquier's first time attending the event since he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering almost 70 years ago.
