On September 21, 2000, 80 ME undergraduate students received scholarships that will make their college careers easier at least financially. Fifty-one sponsors ranging from corporations to interested individuals funded scholarships for students who met high academic criteria. Some of the awards were made in memory of a loved one; others are given to students with interest in a specific area. Many are given every year by generous donors who just want to encourage a new generation of engineers.
Two scholarships were new this year: the John S. Nelson Scholarship and the Hugh N. Powell Scholarship. John S. Nelson received his MS degree from the department in 1976 and is now president of Affiliated Engineers, Inc., in Madison. The Powell Scholarship is in memory of Emeritus Professor Powell who retired in 1989; he died last summer.
The total value of all the scholarships was $184,000.
