Robert J. Sandberg , manager of the College of Engineering Shops , has retired as of August 1 after more than 36 years with the UW. Sandberg began his career with the Mechanical Engineering department in 1964 after military service and receiving his BS degree from the department. He went on to earn his MS here in 1967.
Sandberg worked on many design and fabrication projects for both teaching laboratories and research projects over the years, taught a number of undergraduate courses, and was involved in a COE project in Indonesia in 1982-83. In 1992-93, he won the Academic Staff Distinguished Achievement Award. Sandberg continues to work on design projects on a part-time basis in the shops.
In honor of
Sandberg
's contributions to the
College of Engineering
,
John Bollinger
, dean emeritus of
COE
, has established an annual
Robert J. Sandberg
"Hands-On Engineering Scholarship," in the amount of $1,000.
Bollinger
has asked that the scholarship be awarded to an
ME
junior or senior who has demonstrated exceptional talent in reducing engineering theory to practice through the construction of engineering prototypes using the shop facilities.
Alumni who were helped by
Sandberg
during their student years may also wish to contribute to an undergraduate award in his name; contributions can be made to
UW Foundation
with a directive for the
ME
department.
