David Dornfield earned his BS in 1972, his MS in 1973, and his PhD in 1976 from the ME Department. He now is the Will C. Hall Family Professor of Engineering and Professor of Manufacturing Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. There he does research in acoustic emissions which has application in traditional and precision manufacturing. His work provides manufacturers with viable alternatives in advanced sensor techniques which in turn allow for more robust assessment of process operation. Recent applications are for planarization in semiconductor manufacturing.
A 1964 BS graduate of the department, Leon Janssen is the general manager of academic accounts with General Electric Medical Systems in Milwaukee. He is responsible for GE's commercial relationships with leading university medical schools and hospitals as well as the company's Applied Science Lab and academic research teams. Janssen joined GE in 1967 after serving in the U.S. Army. He began with GE's Aerospace Business before moving to academic accounts.
As part of his work, Janssen has developed a strong working relationship with the UW-Madison, and a significant number of UW's engineering graduates are now working at GE.
During the last four years, Janssen has served as a member and chair of COE's Industrial Advisory Board.
He also serves on a number of boards of directors of community organizations in his community.
