Professor William A. Beckman has retired from the Mechanical Engineering Department and been granted emeritus status by the UW. A retirement celebration was held in Madison on November 17, 2000.

Beckman joined the UW-Madison as an assistant professor in 1963. Prior to coming to the UW, he earned his BS, MS, and PhD from the University of Michigan and worked for Chrysler Corporation. He spent several summers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and was a visiting scientist at CSIRO in Australia and Valbonne, France. He served as chair of the ME department from 1987 to 1991.

Beckman has held an Ouweneel-Bascom Professor Emeritus continuously since 1981, and he has earned numerous other honors over the years including being named a Fulbright Scholar in 1977. He is a Fellow of ASME and of the American Solar Energy Society. In 1963, Beckman joined the Solar Energy Lab, where he has been director in recent years, and he co-developed ME's solar energy course and taught it for over 30 years. He also developed a graduate level course in radiation heat transfer, and he taught thermodynamics and heat transfer as well as other energy courses. Along with Emeritus Professor J. A. Duffie, he co-authored the textbook Solar Energy Thermal Processes.
