ME Building Renovation Project Advances

Mechanical Engineering Building

Plans include replacing the sawtooth part of the ME building, seen here on the left, by a three-story addition. Renovations will also eliminate the volleyball courtyard. (38K JPG)

The UW College of Engineering has announced a $33 million initiative to renovate the Mechanical Engineering Building. The state of Wisconsin will supply two-thirds of the cost, and the remaining one-third is to be raised in gift funds. There has been no major renovation of the ME building since construction, although minor projects over the years have made it more functional.

The ME building was erected in 1931 around an existing machine shop known today as the Sawtooth, built in 1921 as the first structure on what was to become the engineering campus. Plans call for renovating the main ME building as well as tearing down the Sawtooth and replacing it with a three-story addition.

The ME renovation will include major remodeling and a new electrical and data infrastructure to support modern research labs and classrooms. A new central HVAC system will replace the substandard systems currently serving the building, and a new elevator will make all areas of the building more accessible to the disabled. A new main entryway will be created on Engineering Drive facing the new parking ramp constructed last year.

Some of the proposed changes to the interior of the building include a 150-student lecture/tech transfer auditorium, a 75-student virtual reality teaching laboratory, the upgrading of six 35-student lecture/CAD/flexible classrooms, a design laboratory complex for student projects, a computational mechanics center, and a polymer processing laboratory.

Plans for this major renovation are being coordinated by Dean Paul Peercy and by Ed Manuel at the UW Foundation University of Wisconsin Foundation. Suggestions are welcome.
