Rajit Gadh has been promoted from Associate Professor to Professor in the ME Department.

Professor Marvin F. DeVries has been appointed by the National Research Council to the position of Vice Chair for the Panel for Manufacturing Engineering and ex-officio member of the Board of Assessment of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Programs.

Associate Professor Tim A. Osswald's new book Polymer Processing Fundamentals has been published by Hanser Publishers, Munich. Osswald is part of the Rheology Research Center in the ME Department.

Professor William A. Beckman has again been selected as an ASME Distinguished Lecturer with talks in Baltimore, Oklahoma City, and Huntsville on the topic "Can Solar Energy be Competitive in a Deregulated Energy Market?" He was also an invited plenary speaker at the EuroSun 98 conference in Portoroz, Slovinia, in September, talking about "Modern Computing Techniques for Use in Solar Energy System Simulations."

The second edition of Professor Glen E. Myers' book Analytical Methods in Conduction Heat Transfer has just been published. The text was originally published in 1971. Myers was also honored last spring by being selected by Pi Tau Sigma to receive the chapter's Outstanding Teacher award.

Polygon Engineering Council gave their annual teaching excellence awards to Associate Professor Frank J. Fronczak and Instructor Jay M. Samuel.

Professor Neil A. Duffie has been elected to the grade of Fellow in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He was also named to serve a two-year term as an International Director of the society.

Emeritus Professor Mohamed (Bill) M. El-Wakil has accepted an appointment as Adjunct Professor with Alexandria University in Egypt. He will travel to Alexandria from time to time to assist with curriculum design, seminars, and graduate student placement. Recently El-Wakil spent a month at Cairo University and another month at Alexandria presenting workshops on the EES and FEHT programs to faculty and students.

Emeritus Professor Phillip S. Myers was recently elected to Fellow grade in the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Affiliate Assistant Professor Riccardo Bonazza has received the National Science Foundation CAREER award.

At the Engineers' Day dinner on October 9, Professor John W. Mitchell was presented the Benjamin Smith Reynolds Award for Excellence in Teaching Engineers by the College of Engineering. Mitchell has also recently assumed the editorship of ASHRAE's International Journal of HVAC&R Research.

In October, researchers in the Powertrain Control Research Laboratory received the "Powertrain Excellence Award" at the 1998 Global Powertrain Congress in Detroit. Associate Professor John J. Moskwa and graduate students Guy Babbitt and Steven Seaney accepted the honor for their "Very-High Bandwidth Transient Engine Dynamometer (400 Hz)".
