Department Chair Kenneth W. Ragland presents graduate student Michael Schlax with the J. Gordon Baker Applied Mechanics Fellowship for 1997-98. The fellowship is a full tuition stipend and recognition of graduate research excellence by a student committing to a PhD program in applied mechanics. Schlax is completing an MS thesis under the guidance of Professor Roxann L. Engelstad in the analysis of lithographic masks for the production of next generation integrated circuits. The award committee also recognized Schlax's volunteer work with the Peace Corps in West Africa. The fellowship was established in honor of J. Gordon Baker who graduated from the ME Department in 1928 and received a Distinguished Service Award from the College in 1956. Baker was a pioneer in applied mechanics at Westinghouse Research Laboratories in the 1930s.
