Procter & Gamble Professor in Total Quality, Dr. Donald S. Ermer was presented with the Ragnar E. Onstad Service to Society Award at the Engineers Day Awards Ceremony. The College of Engineering presentation was given in recognition of Ermer's "efforts, persistence, and dedication in the pursuit of quality,...recognized from the international to the national to the local community level."
In 1978, Mechanical Engineering Professor Phillip S. Myers was the first recipient of this award, Professor David R. Otis won the award in 1982, and Professor John W. Mitchell also won it several years ago.
Onstad was an industrial engineer with the Burgess Battery Company who
worked his way to the top. A memorial fund was established in Onstad's
name to honor teachers of engineers who have been leaders in finding
solutions to societal problems.
