A newsletter for alumni, students, and friends of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
The UW College of Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering will host the 52nd Annual ASEE Engineering Design Graphics Division Mid-Year Conference October 24-26 this year. Kim J. Manner is the conference chair.
Professor Donald S. Ermer was a guest speaker for the ASME student chapter's fall Regional Student Leadership Seminar. He talked about the "Quality Improvement Process."
Professor John J. Moskwa has received the last installment of his $411,000 unrestricted award from the Ford Motor Company. In addition to this funding, hardware donations or gifts-in-kind from Ford and other corporations are being used in the Powertrain Control Research Laboratory. The funding has been used to complete development of a highband-width transient dynamometer system in the lab, to purchase transient emission measurement equipment and engine sensors, and to fund transient air/fuel ratio research.
Professor Moskwa will be going on sabbatical next academic year to pursue powertrain research at Ford's R&E Centres in Dunton, England, and at the Aachen facility in Germany. He has also been invited by the ME Department chair at the University of Cambridge, Professor David Newland, to be a visitor in their department where he will lecture and pursue research. In exchange, Dr. Gordon Wright of Ford's center in Dunton will spend the same time period in the Engine Research Center at UW-Madison as a half-time adjunct professor. Dr. Wright is retiring from Ford and will occupy Professor Moskwa's office and manage his powertrain lab in his absence.
Affiliated Assistant Professor Dharmaraj ("Raj") Veeramani has recently received two awards: the 1997 Society of Manufacturing Engineers' Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award and the Society of Automotive Engineers Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award.
Associate Professor Tim A. Osswald's book Materials Science of Polymers
for Engineers (Hanser Publishers, 1996) has been translated into
Japanese, and this version will appear sometime this year.
