Paying for their college education will be a little easier this year for 81 undergraduate students who received scholarships and met their benefactors on September 19. At the 21st annual Scholarship Night, 42 sponsors awarded a total of $90,000 to students.
Professor John W. Mitchell, associate department chair, led the program and introduced guests who included Sandra Arnn, director of Engineering Career Services; Marion Beachley, director of Engineering Cooperative Education; Bruce Mathews, UW Foundation and director of Engineering Development; and Ed Manuel, UW Foundation.
This year's student recipients received awards ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. In addition to a generous scholarship, some corporate donors also included a summer job. Many of the donors were ME alumni, some of whom come yearly from throughout the country to make the presentations themselves.
The student scholarship winners were mostly Wisconsin natives, but
their numbers also contained students who are from other states plus
Canada and Singapore. They applied for the funding by mid-March and
were selected primarily on the basis of the their grade point average
and their year in school. Professor Glen E. Myers, chairman of the ME
departmental scholarship committee, was ably assisted by Linda Aaberg,
student status examiner, in managing the program.
