    Summary

    Professor Rowlands is interested in the following subjects and their applications: modern materials; experimental, structural & hybrid mechanics; micromechanics; fatigue; and fracture.

    Prior to joining UW-Madison in 1975, he had eight years of research and development experience in experimental mechanics, stress analysis and composites at IIT Research Institute in Chicago. His present efforts include using infrared thermography (thermoelastic stress analysis), Doppler interferometry, microscopy and moire for stress and fracture analysis of composite structures, fiber-reinforced concrete, bolted joints, metal plate connectors in wood structures, photomechanics and cellulosic composites. Rowlands' interest in structural mechanics is demonstrated by the six years he served as director of the Wisconsin Structures and Materials Testing Laboratory.

    Rowlands teaches courses in experimental stress analysis/mechanics, composites and photomechanics, and mechanics of materials (laboratory). He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Experimental Mechanics. Additionally, he belongs to the American Academy of Mechanics and the American Academy of Composites, and is a registered professional engineer.
