Professor Fronczak's research interests include machine and product design, fluid power, and vibrations, as well as design of biomedical equipment, particularly related to rehabilitative and assistive devices. His current research involves both analytical and experimental work in these areas. He is investigating the design of vehicles with computer-controlled hydrostatic transmissions and accumulator energy storage. This work has potential applications in manufacturing and the automotive, agricultural and aerospace industries. An additional related project involves the design of a free-piston engine-pump.
Fronczak is also conducting both experimental and analytical studies involving the design of a hypocycloid engine/compressor. This novel design offers the potential of reduced vibration and engine wear.
Another of Fronczak's recent research projects involves the design and construction of a unique multi-degree-of-freedom testing machine.
Professor Fronczak is a member of UW-CREATe (Center for Rehabilitative Engineering and Assistive Technology) and is engaged in the design of products for individuals with movement related disabilities. A variety of products have been designed and/or redesigned. Recent projects include a hand-powered cycle for individuals with disabilities, and ergonomic power tools, as well as other devices. These design efforts involve considering factors such as manufacturability, ease of assembly, serviceability, environmental friendliness and functionality.
