Dr. Clemons' research interests are in composites from polymers and bio-based materials. These bio-based materials include wood-derived materials such as wood flour, wood fiber, and pulp/paper fibers as well as natural fibers from sources other than wood. These materials present challenges in processing and performance due to their low thermal stability, low bulk density, affinity for moisture, and the low melt strength of polymer melts that typically have high fiber contents. Dr. Clemons is working on overcoming these limitations through a greater understanding of bio-based materials, additive technology, and process improvement. Dr. Clemons is also developing appropriate characterization techniques to quantify microstructure and morphology and then relating it to composite performance such as dynamic facture toughness.
Despite a rapidly growing market for wood-plastic composites in exterior building products, the related issues of moisture sorption and biological resistance are insufficiently understood. This knowledge deficit will become more critical as these composites are considered for applications where greater structural performance is required. Dr. Clemons is developing improved characterization methods and a greater understanding of moisture sorption and biological resistance and their relationship to durability.
More recently, Dr. Clemons has begun research on composites of polymers and cellulose nanocrystals derived from wood pulps. These high-performance cellulose nanocrystals are biosynthesized in the wood cell wall and offer significant reinforcing potential. Methods for preparing these composites, nanocrystal dispersion and orientation, and polymer-nanocrystal interaction are of particular interest.
Since 2001, he has been the Conference Chair for the International Conference on Woodfiber-Plastic Composites, a biennial conference with over 450 international attendees from the scientific, technical, and commercial communities encouraging the exchange and dissemination of information on the latest advances in wood-plastic composites. Dr. Clemons is also a reviewer for a wide range of journals including the Journal of Applied Polymer Science, Wood and Fiber Science, Holzforschung, Polymer Composites, and Advances in Polymer Technology.
