MS Degree Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Thesis Option:Total of 24 credits, at least 18 formal course credits (at least 9 formal course credits in ME taken at the UW-Madison), 5 thesis credits, and examination on the thesis.

    OR

    Course Option:Total of 30 credits, at least 24 formal course credits (at least 15 formal course credits in ME taken at the UW-Madison). Nine credits must be core ME courses. The following is a list of core courses. At least 3 credits of independent study with a faculty advisor are required.

  2. Residency Requirements (also see Graduate School Handbook): At least one semester in residence. One-half of the required formal courses and all thesis work must be taken in residence.
  3. A GPA of at least 3.0 based on all graduate-level formal course credits attempted and a GPA of 3.0 in ME formal courses are required. Credits with a grade of "D" or "F" cannot be used to satisfy requirements.
  4. The MS program must include at least one 700-level formal course taken at the UW-Madison.
  5. Acceptable courses are listed in the Graduate Catalog. Students must be enrolled as a graduate student to obtain graduate credit.
  6. Thesis credit will be permitted only from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, except in the case of a legally approved co-advisor; credit then can be obtained through the co-advisor's department.
  7. Students are required to take ME 903: Graduate Seminar-1 credit for the first two semesters in residence at the UW-Madison. All students off-campus, part-time, or outreach will be exempt from taking ME 903 until they are on campus. Exemption is on a case-by-case request.

FINAL DRAFT
OF THESIS

Students must submit the final-draft copy of the thesis to the examination committee at least one week prior to the exam.

CHECKLIST

  • In the first three weeks of the semester in which you intend to graduate, students should fill in the graduate school petition form to verify that all Graduate School requirements have been met. This form is available outside the ME Student Services Office, 3182 Mechanical Engineering Building.

  • All Master's students must report to the ME Student Services Office, 3182 Mechanical Engineering Building, to order an MS warrant. Thesis students need to do this four weeks (or earlier) prior to the oral examination. Thirty-credit students need to do this during the first seven weeks of their last semester before graduation. After this warrant is properly signed, it must be returned to 3182 Mechanical Engineering Building along with a signed departmental check-out sheet in order to receive the degree.
