"Combustion, Physical and Chemical Fundamentals, Modeling and Simulation, Experiments, Pollutant Formation" by J. Wanatz, U. Maas and R.W. Dibble, Springer, 3rd Edition, ISBN 3540677518, 2001.

Course objectives

Advanced level understanding of combustion processes and application to industrially relevant applications, including furnaces and internal combustion engines. Emphasis is placed on the use of computer simulations to integrate fundamental combustion physics into the design and optimization of practical devices.

Topics covered

Thermodynamics of combustion.
Flame theory.
Detonation.
Spray and droplet combustion
Engine applications of course topics.

Class meets twice a week, for 75 minutes each session

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, and does provide design experience.

This course serves students in a variety of engineering majors. The information below describes how the course contributes to the college's educational objectives.

The course describes the application of engineering principles to practical combustion devices. Engineering students learn to apply advanced technologies for optimizing energy usage and reducing the evironmental impact of combustion emissions. Emphasis is placed on understanding and modeling physical phemonena, and on the use of advanced computer simulation to describe practical combustion systems

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

The final grade is based on the compilation: literature reviews 15%, computer assignment 35%, take home exams 50%.
Progress is assessed by monitoring performance on exams and assignments. The computer project includes a written report, and is typically conducted with a team.
