General course in heat transfer covering conduction, convection and radiation (e.g.,ME 364 or ME 564)
Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Algebra
Calculus (differentiation, integration)
Ordinary differential equations (first-order, linear)
Energy-balance concepts from thermodynamics and heat transfer
Rate equations for conduction and convection
Finite-difference models/solutions for one-dimensional problems (both steady and transient)
Textbook(s) and/or other required material

Topics covered

Conduction review (derivation and solution of ordinary differential equations for one-dimensional, steady-state problems and for lumped-parameter transients)
Bessel equations/functions (series solutions, special functions, general Bessel equation)
Separation of variables (one-dimensional transients, two-dimensional steady and transient problems for a variety of boundary conditions)
Superposition (simplification of nonhomogeneous problems, Duhamel's theorem)
Finite differences (two-dimensional, steady and transient problems; Cholesky solution of algebraic equations; Euler, Crank-Nicolson and exact solutions of transient problems)
Finite elements (Galerkin formulation for two-dimensional problems; linear triangular elements; energy-balance concepts; program FEHT)
Class/laboratory schedule

Lectures normally meet once per day on MWF for 50 minutes each time.
