545 Fluid Power. II; 3 cr. Generation, transmission, and utilization of power in systems in which the working fluid is oil or air; analysis and evaluation of pumps, motors, valves, and other fluid components; dynamic analysis and control of fluid power systems. P: ME 340 or equiv or cons inst.

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

The prerequisite is ME 340, Introduction to Dynamic Systems Analysis. The relevent topic knowledge that the students should bring into ME 545 includes: Fundamental modeling skills for complex, dynamic systems Understanding of the nature of solutions to differential equations Linearization techniques Block dioagram representation of dynamic systems

Textbook(s) and/or other required material

No text required. Extensive course notes (essentially the first draft of a text developed by Prof. Norm Beachley) that have been developed specifically for this course are required.

Course objectives

The course will develop the students' knowledge and understanding of hydraulic devices and hydraulic systems. The students should be able to understand the principles of operation and the design details of hydraulic pumps, motors, valves, actuators, and systems. They should be able to analyze both the steady-state and the dynamic performance of individual hydraulic components and systems.
They should also be able to relate the theory with the practical applications of these principles

Three classes per week, 50 min. classes.

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, and does provide design experience.

Economic issues are continually adressed by comparing the characteristics of hydrostatic power transmission to other alternatives.

Relationship of course to undergraduate degree program objectives and outcomes

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

The course supports the progarm objectives by providing teh students with advanced knowledge in fundamental engineering principles as well as applications. The course continuously relates fundamental principles of dynamics and mechanicla design to actual hydraulic devices and systems.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Students are graded on the following: Homework assignments (typical analysis type problems) Special assignments (these projects are done either individually or in teams and invlove relating the theoretical principles to and actual hydraulic device or system. These assignments usually require teh students to gather information form outside the text in order to satisfactorily complete the assignment) Exams (two plus a final) Group project (look at a real hydraulic system and prepare a report and presentation on what it does and how it does it.)
