470 Optical Applications in Mechanical Engineering. II; 3 cr. Review of geometric optics; lasers; optical measurement system and design; laser material processing system and design; introduction to fiber optic delivery and detection. P: Physics 202.

Course objectives

The main goal of this course is to introduce engineers to the characteristics of light which can be used to accomplish a variety of engineering tasks. At the end of the course, students should be familiar with the range of possible applications for optics in engineering, and have a sense of how to evaluate the potential of optical methods vs. non-optical methods for any task.

Topics covered

Introduction, review of optics; geometric optics
Optical measurement tools: sources and detectors; time-of-flight, angle detection, interference
Introduction to mechanical measurement systems; distance, length, in-plane strain, out-of-plane strain, velocity
Distance measurements; small displacements ( d < l ); medium displacements ( l < d < 1 m); large displacements ( d > 1 m )
In-plane strain; introduction to point and full field methods; comparison of methods with conventional methods
Velocity measurements; introduction to point and full field methods for solids and gases; comparison with conventional methods
Temperature and concentration measurements; introduction to single point and full field methods for gas fields; comparison with conventional methods
Introduction to material processing; survey of conventional methods for welding, cutting, drilling, and heat treatment; energy delivery systems; material properties of interest for heat transfer problem
Welding; evaluation of candidate materials for weldability with laser source; numerical modeling of heat transfer problem
Cutting and drilling; evaluation of candidate materials for cutting and drilling; strategies for different materials; consideration of mechanical (conventional) cutting with thermal cutting
Optical fiber delivery and detection systems; review of optical fiber fundamentals; optical fibers for supply and detection
Medical applications of measurements and processing; application of measurement systems to biological systems; applications of materials processing concepts to biological materials
