467 Refrigeration. Irr; 3cr. Analysis, design, performance prediction of vapor-compression and absorption refrigeration components and systems; applications to heat pumps and cryogenics. P:ME 361 or equiv & ME 364 or equiv.

Course objectives

Review essential concepts of thermodynamics and heat transfer
Provide in-depth understanding of the principles of vapor compression refrigeration and its applications
Investigate alternative cooling methods including absorption, magnetic, and desiccant cooling
Provide experience in using the computer to solve numerically challenging problems
Provide design opportunities through open-ended engineering problems.

Review of the 1st and 2nd Law of Thermodynamics
Availability analysis
Single-stage vapor compression cycles
Refrigerant properties
Alternatives types of compressors and expanders
Advanced vapor compression cycles
Absorption chillers
Cryogenic cycles
Alternative cooling cycles (magnetic, desiccant, acoustic,..)
Psychrometric
Combined heat and mass transfer devices
Cooling tower and cooling coil designs

Class/laboratory schedule

3 one-hour lecture sessions per week

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

This course serves students in a variety of engineering majors. The information below describes how the course contributes to the college's educational objectives.

This is a technical elective course in Mechanical Engineering that supports the Departments objectives 1.2, 1.3 and 2. refrigeration cuts across many areas of engineering. Engineering students from other engineering disciplines who have some background in thermodynamics and heat transfer could enroll in this course.
