Catalog Description

314 Introduction to Competitive Manufacturing. I, II; 3 cr (I). An introduction to techniques for improving decision making in increasing the productivity of design and manufacturing processes. Quality improvement tools are presented as well as the methods of engineering economy and the role of manufacturing automation and systems, through lectures and laboratories. P: Stat 224 & ME 313 or cons inst.

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Quantitative and qualitative understanding of common manufacturing processes.
Understanding of use of procedural computing languages for repetitive calculations.

Course objectives

Introduce techniques for improved decision making for increased quality and productivity of manufacturing processes.
Present quality improvement methods that lead to decreased cost and reduced cycle time.
Present methods of engineering economy for both improved professional and personal economical decision making.
Introduce the concept and practice of modern manufacturing systems including automation, metrology and computer-aided manufacturing.

Contribution of course to meeting the professional component

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

The following statement indicates which of the following considerations are included in this course: economic, environmental, ethical, political, societal, health and safety, manufacturability, sustainability.

One of the focuses of this course is to illustrate how Quality, Health and Safety, and the Environment are interrelated. This is accomplished through numerous industrial examples. Safety considerations in design of automated manufacturing equipment are also discussed.

Relationship of course to undergraduate degree program objectives and outcomes

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

Ability to design,conduct,analyze, and interpret experiments. Understanding of professional and ethical reponsibilities.. Ability to use quality improvment techniques and engineering methods to improve manufacturing and productivity. Familiarity with the use of statistical tools for enterprize system improvements. Ability to work on cross-functional teams and provide leadership.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Laboratory reports are submitted weekly by students and graded based on level of comprehension of key techniques, methods and concepts.
A quiz is given at the end of each 5-week session on economics, quality and manufacturing systems. Quizzes are graded based on level of comprehension of key techniques, methods and concepts.
