Catalog Description

170 Civil Engineering Graphics. I, II, SS; 2 cr. To develop an awareness of and appreciation for work that is characteristic of civil engineering. Graphical communication including lettering, drawing equipment and techniques; geometric construction, orthographic projections, pictorial drawing, and technical sketching, isometric, oblique and perspective projections, descriptive geometry, computer-aided design drawing, applications to civil engineering problems. P: Open to All Undergrads.

Course objectives

To introduce students to several different techniques used in graphical communication. To introduce, and develop the art of seeing and representing, 3 dimensional objects in 2 dimensional space. To develop the skills necessary to communicate design concepts and design intents in a non verbal manner.

Topics covered

Basic drafting techniques, Introduction to Descriptive Geometry, Orthographic Projection, Auxiliary Projection, Section Drawing, Isometric Drawing, Perspective Drawing, Graphic applications related to Civil Engineering

Class/laboratory schedule

Two 1 hour 50 min Lecture/Laboratory sessions per week.

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

This course provides a controlled design project, which is intended to simulate the design process of a typical Civil Engineering problem.

This course provides an introduction to techniques, and skills which form the basis by which design ideas and intents may be communicated graphically.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Students progress is evaluated through a series of daily topic related projects, and exams. A final project serves to summarize previously covered topics.
