When Physics Professor Susan Coppersmith arrived on campus this summer, one of the first things she did was join the Materials Science Program. "I thought it was important to find out what's going on, on the campus," she says.

To Coppersmith, "what's going on" means not only the opportunity to learn about research projects that relate to her interests, but also the chance to meet people from a variety of campus departments.

Her desire to mingle academically stems in part from the time she spent working at Bell Labs in New Jersey. "Bell is an industrial lab that is an interdisciplinary environment, and so you get used to finding out what's going on in other areas of materials science," she says.

Coppersmith, who joined the physics faculty after six years at the University of Chicago, studies the complex dynamics of nonequilibrium materials. "The aim is to take advantage of the remarkable behavior of different materials to gain insight into fundamental physics principles," she explains. "Specific topics I have worked on recently are granular materials and disordered magnets."

She looks forward to working with — and learning from — people in other fields who bring to the table different points of view. "And so the Materials Science Program just seemed like a really natural thing," she says.
