The Center for Limnology was established in 1982 to continue the legacy of aquatic research begun by Birge and Juday at this university. It has two laboratory/field stations, which are availabe to Limnology and Marine Science researchers. Units of the Center for Limnology include the Laboratory of Limnology, located on the UW-Madison campus, on the shore of Lake Mendota, and the Trout Lake Station, an ecosystem research station located in Vilas County, in the northern Wisconsin lake district.
The Water Science & Engineering Laboratory, located next to the Limnology Lab on Lake Mendota, is the home of the Environmental Chemistry and Technology Program. This facility provides laboratories, offices, classrooms, instruments, and computers available for use by faculty, students, and researchers.
The interdisciplinary nature of the Limnology and Marine Science Program facilitates access to many specialized facilities and support on campus. Controlled environment laboratory space is available at the Biotron.

The Great Lakes Research Facility is located in Milwaukee on Lake Michigan. This facility, operated by the UW-Milwaukee, provides access to research vessels for work on the Great Lakes.
