| Financial Support |
|
Financial assistance is available to GLE graduate students, including research assistantships, teaching assistantships, fellowships and special grants. Decisions regarding financial support are based on letters of recommendation, grades and GRE scores.
Research assistantships are awarded to candidates whose interests or experience best match the research programs of faculty members. The fellowship application for the fall semester is due on December 15th of the previous year. Applications for other types of support are accepted until mid-February.
Research Assistantships
These appointments fall under the supervision of the major professor conducting the research. Students interested in research assistantships (RAs) in a particular area are encouraged to contact a faculty member with similar research interests. An RA permits the most rapid progress toward a degree and normally provides exemption from out-of-state tuition.
Teaching Assistantships
Teaching Assistantships (TAs) involve teaching rather than research. They vary in pay depending on the level of teaching responsibilities and typically provide out-of-state tuition exemption. Teaching assistants earn approximately the same pay as research assistants. Teaching experience is particularly desirable for students considering an academic career.
Fellowships
Fellowships are offered by the National Science Foundation, the Hertz Foundation, the Graduate School and a number of industries and foundations. Because some have fall application deadlines, it is necessary to apply early. GRE scores for the General Test are required with most fellowship applications.
