My research is focused on describing geologic heterogeneities in the subsurface in order to find a better way of quantifying dispersion of contaminants in the subsurface. Detailed hydrogeologic field data are necessary to elucidate small-scale heterogeneities within geologic facies. Efforts are directed toward quantifying these heterogeneities within glacial outwash deposits. We hope to simulate the essential features of glacial outwash in Wisconsin order to construct better contaminant transport models.
Other research activities include groundwater-lake studies at NSF's Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site in northern Wisconsin, including the effects of global climate change on groundwater and lake levels, investigations of groundwater recharge and pesticide contamination in central Wisconsin, and hydro-geologic restoration of wetlands. I am also interested in developing protocols for application of groundwater models with special attention to model calibration. I recently finished a textbook on applied groundwater modeling published by Academic Press, 1994.
