401 Special Topics in Geological Engineering, Wind Energy Site Design and Construction. Cross-listed with CEE 639. I. 3 cr. Aspects of wind energy covered are turbine basics, energy production, and turbine systems. Wind plant design categories covered include site-analysis, electrical grid analysis, environmental design parameters, foundation systems, and economic design parameters. Subjects on wind energy construction include site preparation, turbine installation, site maintenance, design life, and upgrade potential. The course is concluded with a short course on offshore wind energy. Several guest lecturers will be speaking throughout the course and the course includes two tours to local wind power sites. P: CEE/GLE 330 (or concurrent registration) or instructor's consent.

Course objectives

Consider wind energy policy and the impact of third party engineering reviews
Develop your understanding of the mechanics and principles of structural loads relating to foundations, access roads, and support facilities
Discover how the components of site layout and control interact with the design aspects of foundation, access roads, substations, and collector systems
Gain detailed knowledge of specific components of wind power plant civil design (e.g., layout and control, material procurement, geotechnical issues and foundations, substation and collection system)
Learn interactively with invited speakers from the profession and practice of wind energy design and construction and through tours to local wind power plants

Introduction and overview of wind energy basics
Turbine basics
Wind turbine tower and foundation options
Balance of plant layout and design
Front-end site analysis
Site analysis and layout
Electrical grid interconnection
Environmental site considerations
Foundation systems and design
Offshore wind plant options and foundation considerations
Site grading and preparation
Turbine lift scheduling, calculations, and erection
Electrical system (turbine wiring, underground collection, grounding)
Substation and collector system site design
Operations and maintenance

Class/laboratory schedule

Class meets twice a week for 75 minutes

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Grades are comprised of exams (2), homework, and a design project with oral presentation
