  1. A bachelor's degree in either engineering or the physical sciences from an approved (accredited) institution. International applicants must have a degree comparable to an approved U.S. bachelor's degree.
  2. A minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours (approximately two years of work).
  3. Every applicant whose native language is not English must provide scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) prior to admission.Applicants are exempt if: their official language of instruction at the undergraduate level is English; they have completed two full-time semesters of graded work, exclusive of any ESL courses, in U.S. college/university or American college/university; or if they have degrees from an accredited U.S. college/university or American college/university. An admitted applicant whose TOEFL (paper-based) test score is below 600; TOEFL computer-based test (CBT) score below 250; TOEFL Internet Based is below 104; or MELAB below 88 will be required to take the English as a Second Language Assessment Test (ESLAT) upon arrival, and register for any recommended English as a Second Language (ESL) course(s). The TOEFL test must have been taken two years prior to the start of the semester your are applying for (for example, if you are applying for Fall 2008, scores must be from September 2006 or later).
  4. International applicants must show evidence of adequate financial resources for the anticipated duration of their program. Once an applicant is recommended for admission by the department, the graduate school will request this financial statement.
  5. You are required to submit a Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) score for the General Test unless you have completed your BSIE at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
