Junior Henry Ton was one of two College of Engineering undergraduates to receive UW-Madison Excellence in Student Organization Leadership Awards during a May 8 breakfast. The awards recognize students who, through their involvement in student organizations, are having a positive effect on campus and student life. As chair of the Asian and Pacific American Council (APAC), the umbrella organization for 16 campus Asian and Pacific American organizations, Ton has been instrumental in standardizing APAC's structure, creating a 100-page worker manual, proposing a comparative American studies department on campus, and organizing the Wisconsin Asian Pacific American Conference held in March, among other accomplishments. Undergraduate Richard Holden has won an Academic Excellence Award from the University Book Store. The honor goes to undergraduates who best demonstrate excellence by completing an independent study project. His advisor on the project was Assistant Professor Ben-Tzion Karsh. Kamisha Hamilton, PhD student of Assistant Professor Ben-Tzion Karsh, has been awarded a Worldwide University Network Global Exchange Fellowship. She will visit the University of Sheffield where she will study workflow, handoffs and continuity of care in the emergency department at the local teaching hospital. Specifically, she will participate in a pilot study seeking to understand communication between clinicians when handing off information during shift changes. Industrial engineering PhD student Carla Vivacqua has received the fall 2002 Graduate Student Council (GSC) Mentor Award. Faculty members and peers selected her for the honor. The Graduate School Mentor Award recognizes graduate students who have given of themselves to help their peers succeed in graduate school. It particularly focuses on students who, in addition to their academic duties, assume responsibility for the well being of their fellow graduate students. Her advisor is Professor Harry Steudel.
