653 Organization and Job Design. (Crosslisted with Psych 653.) I or II; 3 cr. Design of productive organizations and people's roles within them. Issues including boundary location, organizational decision levels, autonomous work groups, implementation and diffusion. Roles of the union. Case studies. P: Grad st or IE 349.

Exposure to field data collection approaches.
Basics of job features and characteristics.
Exposure to job design and job stress theories.
Teamwork project experience.

Course objectives

To be able to conduct a detailed job analysis.
To be able to write a job description.
To understand theories of job design and employee motivation.
To be able to apply analysis and theory to job redesign.
To understand organizational management approaches for increasing employee motivation.

Topics covered

Methods of data collection for job analysis.
Theories of job design and organizational management.
Features of jobs that affect employee motivation.
Job redesign.
Teamwork.
Ethical treatment of employees.

Class/laboratory schedule

2 lectures of 75 minutes each per week.
