Catalog Description

556 Occupational Safety and Health Engineering. I; 3 cr. Introduction to the principles of safety and health hazards in the industrial environment. This course provides engineers with the fundamentals of measurement, evaluation, regulation, and control of hazardous conditions, toxic substances, physical agents, and dangerous processes in industrial operations. P: IE 349 or Grad st or cons inst.

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Students should have a strong understanding of human factors engineering, specifically how different elements of a work system can impact human performance.

No required textbook.

Course objectives

Students will be able to identify a variety of occupational hazards.
Students will be able to apply analytical tools to define occupational heazards.
Students will be able to apply intervention strategies for ameliorating occupational hazards.
Students will know where to find information resources regarding occupational hazards.

Topics covered

Lectures will cover the history of occupational safety, cost of occupational accidents and injuries, theories of accident causation, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Worker's Compensation, the identification, analysis and control of a variety of occupational hazards including ergonomic hazards, falls, machinery, temperature, electricity, pressure, fire and noise, safety training, safety program development, accident analysis, proactive safety analysis and safety ethics.

Class/laboratory schedule

Two sessions per week of 75 minutes each.

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

This course prepares students to identify, analyze, and control real-world safety hazards that can contribute to occupational injuries and diseases. As such, students will be better able to design real-world industrial systems to not only promote performance, but also safety.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Students progress will be assessed through three exams, as well as in class participation during class discussions.
