Catalog Description

510 Facilities Planning. (Crosslisted with ME 510.) I; 3 cr. Introduction to plant location theory and analysis of models of plant location; models for determining plant size and time phasing; line balancing models; techniques for investigating conveyor and other material handling problems; and models of plant layout. P: IE 315, 323, 349 or cons inst.

Course objectives

To gain an understanding and appreciation of the principles and methodologies relevant to the planning and design of "production oriented" facilities.
To develop skills and learn modern analytical techniques useful for solving facilities planning problems in such areas as:
A. Manufacturing Systems Design; B. Plant Layout; C. Material Handling Systems, Conveyors; D. Cellular Manufacturing Systems
To gain an appreciation of the many qualitative considerations relevant to solving facilities design problems.

Contribution of course to meeting the professional component

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, and does provide design experience.

The following statement indicates which of the following considerations are included in this course: economic, environmental, ethical, political, societal, health and safety, manufacturability, sustainability.

Students learn to apply knowledge of math, economics, and engineering principles to solve facilities design problems. Students learn to use appropriate techniques, skills, and tools to identify, formulate, analyze, and solve engineering and facilitities design problems using computer tools such as spreadsheets, simulation, and CAD. Students develop an understanding of economic principles necessary to propose and get approval of facility changes. Students get practice in writing clearly, using graphics effectively, and justifying solutions to production facility problems. Students get a semester long design experience that involves: 1. Identification of the client's needs; 2. Application of IE knowledge to develop a plan of attack; 3. Design of a problem solution(s)with considerations of economics, safety/human factors, and people needs; 4. Evaluation of the acceptability of the solutions; 5. Presenting a progress and final report; 6. Giving a formal presentation to communicate the final plan.

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

Serves as a Junior Design Elective Provides a open-ended design experience and learning opportunity on how to communicate effectively and work well on teams. Provides a open-ended design experience and learning opportunity on how to design a complex system to meet a set of defined needs. Provides a learning opportunity in using computer tools such as spreadsheet and computer simulation to determine and evaluate design alternatives. Provides a learning experience that inherently helps to prepare students for life-long learning through open-ended problem solving where the students need to seek out new and additional information on their own to generate good solutions.
