NEW! The Student Shop goes CNC! See bottom of page!
The College of Engineering Shops offer a wide range of conventional and specialized services to the College of Engineering, the University community and State of Wisconsin agencies.
In addition to the usual machine tools found in a well-equipped shop, the COE Shops can provide the following:
The Southwestern Industries 1540V CNC lathe is the latest addition to the array of CNC machines in the Instrument Makers' Shop. This lathe features constant surface speed, gang tooling and a very accurate spindle. The control runs Microsoft Windows and can be networked to our instrument makers' workstations. This flexible machine can do small, highly precise parts as well as larger conventional lathe work.

The Discovery Area, B1085 Engineering Centers Building, offers large areas for work on student projects. The COE Student Shop, Tool Crib, Concrete Canoe Lab and three meeting rooms open onto this area. A QuickTime panorama of this image is available (1.9 MB). OPEN the QuickTime panorama. |

The newest machine in the Student Shop is the TRAK K2E from Southwestern Industries. This is a very capable 2-axis CNC milling machine about the size of a classic Bridgeport. The machine can be used in manual, "canned cycle" and fully programmed mode. 2D contours, bolt circles, pockets, frames and irregular shapes are easy to machine.
|
The heart of the K2E is the ProtoTRAK Edge control. This PC-based device can function as a DRO or 2D CNC control. Programs may be entered conversationally on the panel or via the built-in floppy disk drive. Graphic representation of the programs and shop math are available on the screen. Tutorial manuals may be checked out from the Tool Crib. See Dave Vidlock for help setting up the K2E.
