Re-entry Students

Congratulations on your decision to return to UW-Madison!

Regardless of the reasons that lead to your departure from UW-Madison, the College of Engineering would like to welcome you back and help you develop a plan for success upon your return. Below you will find information on applying for reentering as well as information on developing a plan for a successful return.

Requirements

Students who were enrolled at UW-Madison but who have not attended for one semester or longer are considered reentry students. Any undergraduate student who leaves UW-Madison and needs to apply for reentry to continue pursuit of their degree, must reenter through the school or college in which they were last enrolled. Students who attended another college or university during their time away will need to submit a transcript with their application for reentry. Students may submit an unofficial transcript for purposes of reentry evaluation.

If you were on academic probation or were dropped when you left UW-Madison, your application will be reviewed by the academic dean and or appropriate department. Students in this situation need to:

  • Develop a plan for reentry. The plan should: (1) address the issues that caused your poor academic performance, (2) indicate how you have addressed these issues and how they are going to lead to positive change in your actions upon your return to UW-Madison, (3) include a calculation that indicates the number of credits you will need in order to achieve a cumulative 2.0 GPA and (4) include a course plan that will help you achieve your goals.
  • If you have not yet been admitted to a department, include the courses you will take in the two semesters following your reentry and the grades you will need in these courses in order to be accepted into an engineering department.
  • If you are already in a department, include the courses you will take in the two semesters following your reentry, indicate how these fit into your degree requirements and the grades you will need in these courses in order to remain in good standing.
  • Fill out the reentry Application Form. Include the above information in the “Additional Statement” section of the application.
  • If you attended another University since you last attended UW-Madison, you will need to submit an official transcript. You may submit an unofficial transcript for purposes of reentry evaluation.
