Catalog Description

497 Technical Editing. I, II; 1 cr. Principles and practices of editing technical and scientific documents. Overview of the editing process; defining the editor's rules and responsibilities, revising at structural and sentence levels, and addressing stylistic conventions of technical fields. Application to technical and scientific documents such as reports, proposals, and user manuals. P: EPD 397 or cons inst.

Course Prerequisite(s)

EPD 397

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Experience with planning, organizing, researching, and writing effective technical documents for a variety of audiences
Understanding of conventional documentation styles and format styles for technical documents
Ability to recognize and apply conventions of English grammar, usage, punctuation, and style

Textbook(s) and/or other required material

Required: Samson, Donald C., Editing Technical Writing, first edition. (New York: Oxford University Press, 1993).
Recommended: Eisenberg, Anne, Guide to Technical Editing: Discussion, Dictionary, and Exercises. New York: Oxford University Press, 1992).
A standard college grammar textbook; see me for suggestions.

Course objectives

Students will learn to recognize and articulate specific problem areas in technical documents
Students will practice identifying and discussing differences between strong and weak technical documents
Students will revise technical documents at macro- and micro- levels of editing
Students will gain strategies for communicating effective and constructive criticism

Class/laboratory schedule

First ten weeks of the semester, once a week, for 75 minutes.
