374 Intermediate Technical Japanese I. (Crosslisted with E Asian 374.) I; 3 cr. Fundamentals of Japanese grammar and the most frequent 300 Kanji in the physical sciences; reading, comprehending and translating Japanese scientific texts. P: East Asian 103 & 104 or cons inst. Does not satisfy L&S language or major requirement. Davis.

Course Prerequisite(s)

E Asian 103 & 104

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Understanding of basic principles of science and engineering.
Introductory level knowledge of Japanese.
Ability to use a kanji dictionary and a Japanese-to-English dictionary.
Proficiency with Japanese word processing software is recommended.

Course objectives

In the Intermediate Technical Japanese sequence students will:
gain exposure to 750 kanji that appear frequently in technical fields;
build an extensive vocabulary of Japanese scientific and technical terms;
review the grammar necessary to read Japanese technical documents;
develop more efficient strategies for reading in Japanese;
read Japanese essays on key technologies;
translate a document of their choice.

Topics covered

Students will read essays in Japanese on the following topics:
uniform motion
acceleration and force
conservation of momentum
gravitational acceleration and falling motion
periodic motion
sine waves
ideal gases
equations of state
pressure and flow
transport phenomena
heat and temperature
heat engines
interference, diffraction. reflection and refraction of light
electric charge and electric current
electrolysis and galvanic cells

Monday, Wednesday, Friday; 50 minutes per class

Contribution of course to meeting the professional component

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

This course enhances the student's ability to gather information from diverse sources. This course helps the student develop a detailed technical vocabulary and explore fundamental technical topics in Japanese.

This course serves students in a variety of engineering majors. The information below describes how the course contributes to the college's educational objectives.

This course is required for the 27-credit Certificate in Japanese Studies for Engineering Majors. The Certificate helps meets industry and government agencies' demands for engineers who function effectively in Japanese. The course supports program objectives by providing instruction in a foreign language that is extremely important as a vehicle for conveying current scientific and technical information.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Homework is assigned daily. Reading and translation assignments provide practice in vocabulary building, word usage, sentence structure and reading strategies. All assignments are discussed in class.
Two examinations and one final translation project assess the following: recognition of specific characters and technical terms in Japanese; understanding of Japanese grammatical patterns and idiomatic expressions; ability to read and understand page-length Japanese essays containing technical information.
