Results in for nuclear safety studyProfessor Vicki Bier's study of the impact of deregulation on several safety-critical industries provides valuable insight into the factors that may affect safety of nuclear power plants in deregulated electricity markets. She recently completed a study for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on deregulation and nuclear power safety. Bier collaborated on this study with recent engineering physics master's degree recipient James Joosten of Connect-USA.com, an international nuclear consulting company; and economists David Glyer, Jennifer Tracey and Michael Welsh of Madison-based economics/engineering consulting firm Laurits R. Christensen Associates, Inc., which specializes in regulated and deregulated industries, including electricity. The title of the report is Effects of Deregulation on Safety: Implications Drawn from the Aviation, Rail, and United Kingdom Nuclear Power Industries.
