Center for Plasma Theory and Computation

The diverse plasma physics and fusion research programs at UW-Madison provide a fertile atmosphere for developing and applying plasma theory relevant to a spectrum of magnetic confinement experiments (tokamak, reversed-field pinch, stellarator/torsatron) and fusion reactor design studies. The department also has active collaborations with the largest tokamak facilities (TFTR, JET, JT-60) and design studies (ITER) in the world. Specific topics being addressed (both analytically and computationally) include: plasma instabilities, turbulence and transport; fluid/kinetic hybrid descriptions; RF wave heating and current-drive; and plasma-surface interactions. Plasma theory research is carried out as an interdepartmental activity organized under the Center for Plasma Theory and Computation. EP faculty and staff involved in the center are Professors Callen, Emmert and Moses, and scientists Hegna, Litwin and Santarius. Also participating in the center are Professors Scharer and Tataronis (electrical and computer engineering), and Professors Prager and Terry (physics).
