Plasma Physics and Magnetic Confinement Fusion, with emphasis on:
- Microwave Heating, Current Drive and Diagnostics
- Magnetohydrodynamic Instabilities and their Control
Francesco Volpe is an experimental plasma physicist and a modeller. He worked on various tokamaks (FTU, ITER, DIII-D, AUG), on the MAST spherical tokamak and the W7-AS stellarator in Italy, Germany, the U.K. and the U.S., giving contributions to the study and applications of mode-converted electron Bernstein waves to overdense fusion plasmas and to the control of rotating and locked tearing modes by means of electron cyclotron current drive and magnetic perturbations. In 2009 he joined as a faculty the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
