630 Viscoelastic Solids. I, II; 1-3 cr. Selected topics in such areas as structural mechanics, dynamics, experimental mechanics, vibrations, engineering materials, soil mechanics, engineering analysis, rheology, etc. P: Cons inst.

Course Prerequisite(s)

EMA 303

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Prior to entering this course students should have Senior or Graduate standing. Students in departments other than Engineering Mechanics are welcome, since the course is of an interdisciplinary nature. While exposure to EMA 506 is helpful, other background such as exposure to a stress or vibration analysis course beyond elementary mechanics of materials is beneficial.

Course objectives

Objectives. In EMA 630, students develop an understanding of the mechanics of time and frequency dependent materials which dissipate energy during deformation. We will learn how to determine the response of viscoelastic materials under both quasistatic and dynamic conditions. Applications to be considered include vibration damping, droop and sag of structural members, rolling friction, wave attenuation, and medical diagnosis.
Outcomes. Students must have the ability to use analytical tools to analyze the response of dissipative materials which are time dependent or frequency dependent, and of systems containing such materials.
