Catalog Description

605 Introduction to Finite Elements. I, II; 3 cr. A first course in finite elements, with theory and applications in stress analysis and in areas related to structural mechanics. Practice in the use and/or development of computer programs. P: EMA 304 or 306/307; Math 340; Comp Sci 302; or cons inst.

• A course in mechanics of materials
• Elementary matrix algebra
• Elementary programming in FORTRAN

• R. D. Cook, D. S. Malkus and M. E. Plesha, Concepts and Applications of Finite Element Analysis, 4th Edition, Wiley Publishing Co., 2002.

Course objectives

• To teach the behavior of finite elements, their limitations and proper use, and the responsibility of the user for verifying results.

Topics covered

• Concepts of equilibrium, compatibility, and stiffness (2 classes)
• Stiffness method, applied to the plane truss (5 classes)
• Potential energy and the Rayleigh-Ritz method (4 classes)
• Stiffness matrix formulation by stationary potential method (5 classes)
• Isoparametric elements (6 classes)
• Detecting and avoiding numerical difficulties (5 classes)
• Nonstructural problems (e.g., steady state heat transfer, potential fluid flow)
• Advanced topics (e.g., plate bending, Mindlin beam elements, ... )
• Error analysis and convergence (4 classes)
• Tests (3 classes)
• Class days allotted to term project work (3 classes)
