Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

In EMA601, students compare the results of their computational and laboratory experiments with the theoretical predictions developed in EMA521.

Course objectives

Course Objectives: It is the intructor's intention to...

teach the students how to perform the study of a family of NACA profiles
teach the students how to run a wind tunnel and its instrumentation
teach the students how to use the Fluent Software Package
convey to the students an appreciation for the importance of communication skills
teach the students how to present the result of their work, both orally and in written form

effectively use the wind tunnel's data acquisition system
appropriately analyze, normalize and correct their experimental data
effectively use the Fluent Software
summarize, compare and synthesize their results and the analytical predictions they studied in EMA521

Topics covered

Experimental measurements of wind speed
Experimental measurements of lift, drag and pitching moment on a 2-D and 3-D wing
Correction of the collected data to make them comparable to theoretical predctions and previous published measurements
Model, mesh and boundary condition generation using the Gambit Software
Subsonic, viscous flow solution using the Fluent Software

Class/laboratory schedule

EMA601 meets twice twice a week for 110 minutes. Class divides into three-people teams. On any given day, one team runs the wind tunnel while the other two perform numerical experiments on Unix platforms. During the semester, each team uses the wind tunnel for a total 14 consecutive hours and the computer for 28.

Contribution of course to meeting the professional component

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of engineering topics, but does not provide design experience.

EMA 601 focuses primarily on the operation of wings and the lift and drag associated with airflow over those structures. It is primarily a technical course and does not cover any of supplemental topics (economics, environmental, etc) listed by ABET.

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

EMA 601 provides education in a fundamental subject (aerodynamics) crucial for those interested in making a career in the aero/astro industry. It also stresses team work and written and oral reporting of one's accomplishments.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Three oral and written progress reports.
One oral and written final report.
The instructor constantly monitors the students' progress, both in the laboratory and the computer room. While the students work indipendently during the weekly meeting periods, the instructor is always present to answer questions and provide assistance and guidance.
