| EMA 304 - Mechanics of Materials |
As with EMA 201 (Statics), students must bring strong analytical skills to EMA 304.
Beer, Johnson and deWolf, Mechanics of Materials, Third Edition, 2002.
Course Objectives:
Course Outcomes: Students must be able to...
conduct themselves professionally and with regard to their responsibilities to society, especially with respect to designing structures to prevent failure.
communicate effectively via written design reports.
Class meets three times per week for conventional 50 minute lectures. The lectures meet together with EMA 303. In addition, there are 6 one-hour laboratory demonstrations on basic strength of materials properties of metals.
The following statement indicates which of the following considerations are included in this course: economic, environmental, ethical, political, societal, health and safety, manufacturability, sustainability.
EMA 304 focuses on the structural response of structural members under load, and there is a strong component of design presented in lectures, homework problems, and a group design project. The open-ended design project gives the students a better understand how the course material applies to engineering practice. Students work in teams to design a structure or device which meets specified failure criterion. In this sense, there is an underlying emphasis on health and safety. Students are also presented with a case study in which they consider the ethical implications of engineering decisions.
EMA 303 is focused to satisfy the College and EMA program objectives in that it will assist in equipping the student with fundamental skills in a particular engineering science (mechanics of materials, structural analysis) via problem-solving, teamwork and communication. In addition, it encourages the students to make well-informed career choices; e.g., aeronautics or astronautics professions as well as other related engineering career fields.
