Engineering Mechanics Fund

We invest in good people

More than 120 years have passed since the Department of Pure and Applied Mechanics formed at UW-Madison, and it has been longer still since the university began offering engineering mechanics courses. The intervening years are richly populated with research advances, excellent education, and transformations that have enabled our engineering mechanics faculty, staff and students to excel in this exciting field.

Today, our educational program continues to evolve and grow. Our faculty members are outstanding scholars whose interests span both traditional and emerging areas of engineering mechanics. Their work puts them at the forefront of current research—and many have been recognized for their contributions with awards from national and international organizations.

In addition, they successfully compete for research funding from federal and industrial sponsors. We use these extramural funds to finance our flourishing master’s and doctoral education programs, support our scientific research staff, and also support our faculty during the summer and part of the academic year as they conduct research.

In many ways, the department is like a business that must maintain its financial posture to serve its mission. A key part of this financial equation is the generous annual gifts that EP alumni and friends give our department via the UW Foundation. State budget cuts have meant a significant decrease in “flexible” funds available to support our students and some limited staff activities. Most of the funds support undergraduate scholarships—but they also create other opportunities for our students. For example, they:

Your gifts enable our department—and our faculty, staff and students—to learn and accomplish more. Administered through the University of Wisconsin Foundation, those flexible funds provide us with the “margin of excellence” in our academic programs.

Here's where we need your support. We've launched an initiative to increase the amount of flexible funding available for the EMA program. Your support via the Engineering Mechanics Fund will strengthen and sustain our tradition of excellence and advancement in the field of engineering mechanics.

Donate securely to the Engineering Mechanics Fund on the UW Foundation website or make checks payable to the University of Wisconsin Foundation (memo: Engineering Mechanics Fund, #1235141), and mail your donation to the University of Wisconsin Foundation, U.S. Bank Lockbox, P.O. Box 78807, Milwaukee, WI, 53278-0807.

Thank you for your continued support of engineering mechanics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison!
