Financial Support

Financial support is available in the form of:

a) fellowships that require no service from the recipient and are awarded to selected students with outstanding undergraduate records

b) teaching assistantships that require service to the department in a instructional capacity

c) GERS research grants for disadvantaged and under-represented students.

d) research assistantships with individual professors conducting supported research;

d) project assistantships

About 55 percent of full-time graduate students at UW-Madison obtain some form of financial aid during academic career.

In addition, a few students hold either assistantships or hourly-pay positions for technical work in independent university laboratories. All entering qualified graduate students will be considered for fellowships.

Cost of Graduate Study

The cost of attending Graduate School is a major concern to all students. Graduate tuition in 2005-2006 for full-time students is $24,008.32 (non-Wisconsin residents) and $8,738.24 (Wisconsin residents) for the academic year. The cost of books, housing, food, etc., not including clothing and transportation to and from Madison, is estimated at $13,000 per calendar year, depending on whether living quarters are shared as well as the quality of those quarters. International students must also provide evidence of health insurance coverage each semester. The University will not waive nor defer the application fee.

International students must provide evidence of full financial support before an I-20 is issued (Master's candidates must show support for two years and Ph.D. candidates for five years). An I-20 will be issued based on an applicant's initial degree goal. If your final degree goal is Ph.D., you may still choose to pursue a master degree before continuing to the Ph.D. This can be done by selecting both M.S. and Ph.D. as your degree goals on the graduate school application. Such a selection does not necessarily take longer than pursuing the Ph.D. degree directly. However, for international students, the Graduate School will view the M.S. as your initial degree goal and this may reduce the amount of financial support you need to provide to receive the I-20.

Financial support is available to some graduate students in the form of fellowships, teaching and research assistantships. A brief description of each along with the application deadline is shown below. Most awards totaling 33% or more provide health insurance benefits and full tuition waiver. GRE scores are required for all forms of financial support except Research Assistantships.

Fellowships

Fellowships require no service from the recipient and are awarded to selected students with outstanding records. Eligible applicants have a superior academic record and excellent GRE General Exam scores. Most Fellowships awards of 33% or more provide a remission of out-of-state tuition and in-state tuition. Completed graduate application and GRE scores must arrive by dates shown below.

Deadline for admission with fellowship consideration: November 15th of the prior year for fall international applicants, and January 5th of the same year for domestic students. For spring, September 30th of the prior year for all applicants.

Teaching Assistantships

Teaching Assistantships require service to the department in an instructional capacity. Semester TA awards also include a full tuition waiver if TA appointment is 33% or more. Eligible applicants should have a strong academic record and GRE General Exam scores. A background in tutoring, teaching, or related work experience is preferred. Non-native speakers of English must submit the result of the Test of Spoken English or the Speak Test. Completed graduate application, GRE scores, and TSE or Speak Test scores (if applicable) must arrive by dates shown below.

Deadline for admission with teaching assistantship consideration: November 15th of the prior year for fall international applicants, and January 5th of the same year for domestic students. For spring, September 30th of the prior year for all applicants.

Graduate Engineering Research Scholars Program (GERS)

For US disadvantaged and under-represented groups. Those with high academic qualifications and research interests will be considered. Same deadlines as noted above. Contact James Barner for more information (barner@engr.wisc.edu).

Research Assistantships

Research Assistantships require assistance to individual professors; research performed is primarily to further education and training of students. Research assistant appointments of 33% or more provide a remission of tuition. Research assistantships are awarded by individual professors. Please contact the professor directly when inquiring about a research assistantship. Research assistantships may be awarded at any time of the year. As many packaged combinations of TA/RA/Fellow are awarded, we recommend that those interested in RA positions submit completed graduate applications by the Fellowship and TA deadlines to fully avail themselves of all possible opportunities.

Project Assistantships

Project Assistantships are graduate students who are employed to assist with research, training, or other academic programs or projects at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Electrical and Computer Engineering has very few positions. Check the Office of Student Financial Services website, www.finaid.wisc.edu, for open positions.
