In February, Wiley-IEEE Press published Magnetic
Actuators and Sensors, a text by John
R. Brauer, (MS ‘66, PhD ‘69) that features computer-aided
engineering methods for designing and applying magnetic actuators and
sensors using the latest software tools.
The National Academy of
Engineering selected Aref Chowdhury (PhD ’01)
as one of 81 participants in its 12th U.S. Frontiers of Engineering
Symposium, which brings together engineers ages 30 to 45 who are performing
cutting-edge research and technical work. Chowdhury studies nonlinear
optics at Bell Labs, the R&D arm of Lucent Technologies. News of

Timothy Mickelson
(BS ‘71) was appointed to the board of directors of Cardiac Science
Corporation, a global cardiac device manufacturer. Mickelson brings
more than 25 years of cardiology-related experience to the company,
including his reputation of striving for higher quality and lower costs.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
named George W. Younkin (MS ’57) recipient of
the 2006 IEEE Richard Harold Kaufmann Award, which honors Younkin for
innovative industrial and commercial numerical control systems and process
control designs during his 50-year career. He currently is a professional
engineer at the industrial controls consulting division of Bull’s
Eye Research, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
