FACULTY PROMOTIONS ANNOUNCED

These faculty promotions have been approved for 2001-2002:

Assistant to associate professor:
David Beebe (BME)
Yogesh Gianchandani
Luke Mawst
Associate to full professor:
Amy Wendt

Akbar M. Sayeed

Akbar M. Sayeed (13K JPG)

Assistant Professor Akbar Sayeed is working on a new collaborative research project involving integrated signal processing and antenna array design for wireless diversity links. The project is funded through the National Science Foundation Information Technology Research (ITR) initiative. Sayeed and Professor Zoya Popovic at the University of Colorado have found a connection between the way Popovic builds antennas and Sayeed's mathematical theory for antenna use in wireless communications. The project is aimed at exploiting that connection for improved wireless communication links.
Fernando L. Alvarado

Fernando L. Alvarado (16K JPG)

Professor Fernando Alvarado is part of a team preparing a report on "national interest transmission lines." Alvarado was a panelist on behalf of the Department of Energy and the Center for Electric Reliability of Transmission Systems (CERTS) in two recent public hearings in Atlanta and Phoenix. He also represented the Power Systems Engineering Research Center (PSerc) in soliciting public input regarding the process of designating transmission lines as "national interest transmission lines."

In his role of Vice-Chairman of the IEEE-USA Energy Policy Committee, Alvarado is working with Don Volzka, president of the Power Engineering Society, and Tom Schneider, Chairman of IEEE-USA Energy Policy Committee in the creation of a document outlining IEEE policy recommendations for electric power system reliability, including the development of reliability criteria to make the system more tolerant to physical threats.
John H. Booske

POLYGON, the engineering student council, awarded Professor John Booske with one of its annual Outstanding Instructor Awards. The winners are chosen by student vote.
Franco Cerrina

Franco Cerrina (28K JPG)

In September, the UW Board of Regents approved the appointment of Franco Cerrina as McFarland-Bascom Professor in Engineering. Cerrina is widely known as a scientific driving force in advanced patterning techniques ranging from X-ray lithography to nanofabrication and recently biotechnology. In addition to his research efforts, he teaches courses regarding semiconductor devices and processing, solid-state physics and optics.
Charles R. Kime

Charles R. Kime (32K JPG)

For 35 years, Charles R. (Chuck) Kime has contributed to the advancement of system fault diagnosis, VLSI circuit testing, built-in self-test as well as ECE instructional program development. It might be hard for most to tell he retired in May of 2001. Kime continues to teach and plans to work on the third edition of Logic and Computer Design Fundamentals. This text, co-authored with M. Morris Mano, is used worldwide, including use at more than 125 U.S. schools. But retirement will afford him more time to be with his wife, two children and grandson. In addition he plans to travel with camera in hand and expand his outdoor photography website, www.woodchuckimages.com.
