Catalog Description

712 Solid State Power Conversion. I; 3 cr. Ddvanced course in power electronics which provides an understanding of switching power converters. Included are DC-to-DC, AC-to-DC, DC-to-AC, and AC-to-AC converters, commutation techniques, converter control, interfacing converters with real sources and loads. Offered every third semester. P: ECE 412 or cons inst.

ECE 412

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Proficiency in mathematical analysis software such as Mathcad, Matlab, Mathematica or Maple is assumed for performing simulations, Fourier analysis and complex analysis.

to use systematic analytical and computer modeling tools to synthesize and evaluate power converters and power conversion systems

Semiconductor realizations
Semiconductor applications
Magnetics
Capacitors
EMI modeling and mitigation
Waveform synthesis and quality
Softswitching converters
Diode and SCR slow switching converters
Classical and Vector control of three phase power converters

Class/laboratory schedule

Two 90 minute sessions per week

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Students are graded on the basis of weekly project assignments and a final examination
