Catalog Description

554 Digital Engineering Laboratory. I, II; 4 cr. Practical aspects of computer system design. Design, construction, and testing of significant digital subsystems. Design, construction, microprogramming, and programming of bit-slice implemented digital computers. P: ECE 351; ECE/Comp Sci 552.

Computer organization and assembly language programming
Introductory computer architecture

Arithmetic unit design
Hardwired and microprogrammed control logic design
Pipelining

Course objectives

To experience the full spectrum of tasks involved in a large, realistic, group-based digital design project - architecture development, organization design, logic design, placement and routing, construction, subsystem and system debugging, and software design and debugging.

Introduction to FPGA use and design (3 hours)
FPGA design tutorial (3 hours)
Team concepts and team decision making (2 hours)
Small laboratory exercise on designing with FPGAs (6 hours)
Miniproject: Terminal interface system using FPGAs (12 hours)
Computer project

Architecture specification and review (12 hours)
Organization design and review (12 hours)
Design entry and software simulation (15 hours)
Hardware prototyping using FPGAs (15 hours)

Project demonstration (1 hour)
Exams (2 hours)

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Students are assess by a written examination over fundamental course concepts, by a demonstration of an implementaton of and report on a miniproject,and by participation in, demonstration of, and report on a major computer design project.
