453 Embedded Microprocessor System Design. II; 4 cr. Lecture and Lab. Microprocessor and microcomputer structures and applications; programming and design of hardware interfaces; emphasis on student projects. P: ECE 315 & 353.

ECE 315
ECE 353

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Basic digital logic
Principles of microprocessors
Assembly language programming
Laboratory experience with digital circuits and microprocessors

Textbook: None.

Reference: Data books from manufacturers. These and other texts are provided on loan.

Course objectives

To design, program, and test advanced microprocessor-based systems for general-purpose and/or special-purpose applications.

Topics covered

Intel StrongARM microprocessor
Windows CE operating system, device drivers, and applications
PCMCIA PC-Card interface
FPGA technologies
C language programming of embedded systems
Component selection
Various interfacing topics
Tests (1 mid-term and final exam)

Class/laboratory schedule

Three 50 minute lectures per week, one 3 hour lab per week.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Computer Usage: Operating system development, and programming of device drivers and applications in the C++ language.
Laboratory Project: Design, construction and programming of a significant project of the students choosing based on the StrongARM platform. A number of specific deliverables are specified for the project.
Plus one mid-term, final exam.
